TF-CBT is designed for individuals who have experienced trauma and are struggling with the psychological effects of those experiences. Those who may benefit include, children, adolescents, adults with childhood trauma, parents, caregivers, individuals with multiple or prolonged trauma exposure, individuals experiencing acute traumatic stress, individuals struggling with trauma-related behavioral issues, individuals with multiple diagnoses, and victims of recent and historical trauma.
TF-CBT is a structured therapy with several key components:
Psychoeducation: It's important to understand how trauma affects the mind and body, and normalize the reactions and responses to traumatic events. Additionally, you'll learn about the therapy process, what to expect, and how it can help you.
Skill Building: You’ll develop practical skills to manage stress and anxiety, such as relaxation techniques, deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness practices. This will help you to manage and regulate intense emotions triggered by trauma memories.
Cognitive Processing: You’ll work on identifying and challenging negative thoughts and beliefs related to the trauma. This process helps you reframe these thoughts in a more positive and realistic way. By examining and modifying your thoughts, you’ll develop a healthier and more balanced perspective on the traumatic experience and its impact on your life.
Trauma Narrative: With guidance, you’ll gradually create a detailed narrative of the traumatic experience. This process helps you confront and process the trauma in a safe and supportive environment. Sharing your trauma story helps to desensitize you to the distressing memories, reducing their emotional impact over time.
In Vivo Exposure: You’ll gradually confront situations or places that you’ve been avoiding due to trauma-related fears. This exposure is done in a controlled and safe manner, helping you regain confidence and reduce avoidance behaviors.
Conjoint Sessions: If appropriate, TF-CBT may involve sessions with family members or close friends. This helps to improve communication, understanding, and support within your support network.
Enhancing Safety: We'll work together to develop strategies for ensuring your ongoing safety and well-being, both emotionally and physically.
